The botanical design of this yellow gold cocktail ring
The word ‘tourmaline’ comes from the Sinhalese ‘turmali’, the name given by merchants in Ceylon to batches of small stones in a variety of colours. This 18-carat yellow gold cocktail ring echoes this love of colour combinations, featuring 8 green tourmalines and 8 citrines set alternately on a branch-like setting. The tourmalines range from olive green to forest green, whilst the citrines range from golden orange to a Madeira hue, totalling approximately 1.87 carats. An unsigned second-hand piece, it owes its character to its offset design, which rises above the band and extends the line of the finger.
Architecture and jewellery craftsmanship
The head consists of openwork branches with a striated, bark-like finish, which divide into two groups of stones. A diagonal row of five stones runs along the upper branch, whilst a cluster of 11 stones occupies the lower section. Each of the 16 round-cut stones is held by four prongs in an open setting, which allows light to enter from behind the stone. The eight citrines total approximately 0.87 carats and the eight green tourmalines approximately 1.00 carats. The ring, polished to a mirror finish, is also openwork with oval cut-outs that lighten the structure without compromising its stability. Between the striated gold of the head and the smooth gold of the band, the hand is bathed in two distinct reflections: one matt and warm, the other bright.
Why choose this second-hand ring
A setting of this type requires the metal to be shaped branch by branch, the texture to be finished by hand, and 16 successive stone-setting operations. This amount of workshop time comes at a high cost in today’s jewellery market, and the second-hand market offers access to a generous 18-carat gold design for a modest budget. The choice of stones is also important. Citrine and tourmaline, with a hardness of nearly 7 on the Mohs scale, withstand regular wear well, and their warm hues complement yellow gold.
