The invention of the moving diamond
In 1976, designer Ronald Kurowski observed the light reflected by water droplets from a waterfall in the Black Forest. This technical observation gave rise to the concept of the moving diamond. This second-hand Chopard ring illustrates this approach with a single natural brilliant-cut diamond estimated at 0.05 carats. The stone is set without a fixed mount at the centre of a heart-shaped motif. The Geneva-based House has created a piece in 18-carat white gold that combines a fluid line with a carefully controlled volume, requiring watchmaker’s precision to assemble its central cavity.
Architecture and jewellery craftsmanship
The body of the ring features a regular, fully polished half-round profile. The setting flares out precisely to incorporate a hollow structure, framed by a double layer of scratch-resistant sapphire crystal. Within this enclosed space, the diamond is held in place by a closed setting in white gold. The base of this metal setting is specifically machined and contoured to glide without any friction against the transparent walls. This precision engineering protects the gem whilst ensuring its constant mobility as the hand moves.
Why choose this second-hand ring
Purchasing this designer piece second-hand is a well-informed decision. The manufacture of such an integrated sapphire setting and the development of a movable setting require a level of craftsmanship and quality control that is extremely costly in contemporary jewellery production. The structure of this setting offers a striking visual presence whilst retaining a lightness suitable for everyday wear. This distinctive design retains its technical and aesthetic appeal over the years.
Contents and condition
The Chopard signature and the 750 hallmark are engraved on the inside of the band, confirming the nature of the alloy used for this size 49 piece. The design of the motif, which integrates the sapphire stones directly into the body of the setting, makes resizing a complex process. Our workshops have rigorously checked the integrity of the sapphires and the security of the central movable setting. This ring will be presented to you in a The Swiss Collector presentation box.
