The sculptural appeal of this Charlotte Chesnais ring
Before founding her Parisian brand in 2015, Charlotte Chesnais designed jewellery for Balenciaga alongside Nicolas Ghesquière. She has retained a sculptor’s approach, where a single line of metal is enough to create volume. This Charlotte Chesnais ring in 18-carat yellow gold is a perfect example of this. A tubular gold wire extends from the band, splits in two, then forms an open loop on the top of the finger. Offered here as a pre-owned piece, this stone-free design focuses entirely on the form and the depth of the polished yellow gold.
Architecture and jewellery craftsmanship
The body of the ring consists of two parallel strands that encircle the finger. On the top, the outer strand traces a wide curve whilst the inner strand closes into a loop and ends in a tapered point, resting against the neighbouring curve. The tube maintains a consistent diameter throughout and is finished with a mirror polish without any sharp edges. Viewed from the front, the ring allows the finger to show through its curves, and light glides along the tubes in a continuous play of reflections. Viewed in profile, the two levels of loops add dimension to the hand without weighing down the finger.
Why choose this second-hand ring
This design does not feature in the designer’s current collection of gold rings; she reserves 18-carat gold for her jewellery line. Buying it second-hand allows you to wear a signature piece of contemporary French jewellery without having to wait for a reissue. With no stones or settings, the ring can withstand the knocks of everyday life, and its mirror polish can easily be restored by a jeweller. It can be worn on its own, as a statement piece, or amongst a cluster of delicate rings that emphasise its volume.
