A drop of topaz at the tip of a golden thread
These blue topaz earrings feature a stone whose name dates back to Pliny the Elder, who linked it to Topazios, an island in the Red Sea, whose gem was in fact a peridot. The modern topaz has retained the name and has a hardness of 8 on the Mohs scale, one of the highest amongst semi-precious stones. Set in 18-carat white gold, each earring features a pear-cut topaz of approximately 1.15 carats suspended beneath a stud set with a brilliant-cut diamond of approximately 0.12 carats. The pair thus features nearly 2.30 carats of topaz and 0.24 carats of diamonds. An unsigned second-hand piece, it owes its appeal to its clean, graphic lines and a clear, bright blue that stands out against the whiteness of the metal.
Architecture and jewellery craftsmanship
These drop earrings consist of three elements. The stud holds the diamond in a four-prong setting, mounted on a butterfly clasp. A connecting ring links it to a smooth, polished stem, which bears the topaz at its tip. The stone is held by prongs on an openwork setting, with the tip of the pear-shaped stone pointing upwards, aligned with the stem. Viewed in profile, this setting clearly reveals the clasp. The connecting ring allows the pendant to hang freely, and over a height of 3 cm, every movement of the head causes the light to shift from one facet to the next.
Why choose these second-hand earrings
When new, blue topaz earrings of this design are usually found in 9-carat gold, or with zirconium oxides instead of diamonds. This pre-owned pair combines 18-carat gold, two brilliant-cut diamonds and topazes weighing over one carat each, at a price far below that of a new piece with the same composition. The hardness of the topaz protects it from everyday scratches. Its height remains understated during the day and comes into its own in the evening, when the hair is worn up.
