The story behind this Bell & Ross Vintage WW2 Régulateur Officer
Bell & Ross draws its inspiration from aviation navigation instruments. The Vintage WW2 Régulateur Officer model, reference WW2-71-SP, pays direct homage to the timekeeping instruments used by bomber navigators in the 1930s. At that time, the minutes had to be read instantly in order to calculate flight headings without error. This is why the regulator-style display features a large central minute hand, with the hour and second hands positioned off-centre. The oversized crown allowed for easy operation whilst wearing thick leather gloves. This timepiece embodies a military aesthetic through its meticulous finishes.
Case, movement and strap of this Vintage WW2 Régulateur Officer
The 47 mm case is crafted from stainless steel with a fully polished finish. Its round shape is accentuated by a bidirectional notched bezel and flexible lugs that mould smoothly to the wrist. The sunburst anthracite-grey dial contrasts with the two silver-toned, blued sub-dials for the hours and seconds. The self-winding mechanical movement, calibre BR-CAL.316, powers the watch, beating at a frequency of 28,800 vibrations per hour and offering a power reserve of 42 hours. It is water-resistant to 50 metres. The black alligator leather strap fastens with a polished steel pin buckle.
Why this Bell & Ross watch
This model has now been discontinued by the brand. It is aimed at enthusiasts of technical timepieces who are looking for an unconventional watch. Its design evokes an era when function dictated form. The second-hand market offers the opportunity to acquire this piece at an attractive price compared to its original list price of CHF 4,900. The regulator display adds a mechanical dimension that sets it apart from classic watchmaking designs.
