The history of this Baume & Mercier Baumatic Chronograph
Baume & Mercier designed the Baumatic Chronograph, reference 6103, in the 1990s. This period marked a gradual return to traditional mechanical watchmaking following a decade dominated by quartz. To incorporate the chronograph complication whilst retaining a small-diameter case, the manufacturer opted for a specific design. It combined a flat base automatic movement with an independent chronograph module designed by the specialist Dubois-Dépraz. This technical choice dictated the distinctive layout of the sub-dials on the dial.
Case, calibre and strap of this Baumatic Chronograph
The stainless steel case measures 36 mm in diameter and features a fully polished finish. The lugs blend into a smooth, double-grooved bezel. Beneath the crystal, which features a Cyclops lens at 3 o’clock, the matt black dial features white-painted Arabic numerals. The main hands are sword-shaped. The movement is the ETA 2892 calibre, supplemented by the Dubois-Dépraz module. It offers a power reserve of 42 hours and operates at a frequency of 28,800 vibrations per hour. The watch is secured on the wrist by a new textured brown leather strap fastened with a steel pin buckle.
Why this Baume & Mercier watch
This chronograph stands out for its modest proportions. 36 mm models fitted with such a complication have become less common on the second-hand market. The combination of the dark dial and the polished steel case makes it suitable for everyday wear. The modular movement powering this model is based on tried-and-tested mechanics.
