The history of this Audemars Piguet Royal Oak
Launched in 1977, the 4100ST model marked a decisive milestone for the Audemars Piguet manufacture. Five years after the launch of the first Royal Oak designed by Gérald Genta – whose 39 mm diameter was considered massive for the time – the brand introduced this 35.5 mm version. This model was designed to meet a specific demand. The radical aesthetic of the steel sports watch needed to be adapted to slimmer wrists. Regarded as a variation with balanced proportions, it enabled the collection to establish itself firmly within the watchmaking landscape of the 1980s, laying the foundations for the line’s ongoing success.
Case, movement and strap of this Royal Oak
Crafted from stainless steel, this timepiece features a 35.5 mm case topped by an octagonal bezel secured by eight hexagonal screws. The surfaces alternate between a rigorous vertical brushed finish and polished bevels. The anthracite grey dial displays the manufacture’s signature Petite Tapisserie guilloché pattern. The hours are marked by applied hour-markers surrounding the date window at 3 o’clock. The watch is powered by the calibre 2123. This self-winding mechanical movement beats at a frequency of 28,800 vibrations per hour and guarantees a power reserve of 40 hours. It is protected by an engraved solid steel caseback. The integrated bracelet, with its characteristic tapering links, fastens with a single folding clasp.
Why this Audemars Piguet watch
Acquiring a vintage timepiece is a unique experience for a connoisseur of fine watchmaking. The reference 4100 is no longer in production, which gives it a special status on the second-hand market. It embodies the raw essence of the original design in a compact format, sought after by today’s collectors who are returning to classic case diameters. The balance between its history, its precise movement and its presence on the wrist makes it a compelling choice. The period dial, with its luminescent elements that have developed a natural patina, bears witness to its authenticity and its history.
