The story behind this Audemars Piguet Royal Oak
The story behind this Audemars Piguet Royal Oak City of Sails chronograph marks two significant events for the manufacture. Produced to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the original model, this limited edition is a collaboration with the Swiss sailing syndicate Alinghi. This partnership preceded the team’s victory in the America’s Cup in 2003. The inclusion of the red logo on the dial of reference 25979ST.OO.D002CA.01 anchors this timepiece firmly in the nautical world. This limited edition of 1,250 stainless steel pieces combines a sporty aesthetic with mechanical precision.
Case, movement and strap of this Royal Oak
The 39 mm octagonal case is machined from stainless steel. It is topped by the distinctive bezel secured by eight hexagonal screws. The surfaces alternate between a matt brushed finish and polished chamfers. The anthracite grey dial features the Grande Tapisserie pattern specific to the collection. It incorporates a black flange and three recessed sub-dials, including the one at 9 o’clock adorned with the Alinghi symbol. The movement is powered by the self-winding calibre 2385, comprising 304 components. It offers a 40-hour power reserve and drives the chronograph seconds hand, the small seconds hand and the date window situated between 4 and 5 o’clock. The watch is fitted with a textured black rubber strap and secured by a steel folding clasp bearing the AP logo.
Why this Audemars Piguet watch
This ‘City of Sails’ edition is of particular interest to enthusiasts of technical watchmaking. Production is limited to 1,250 steel models, ensuring a controlled supply on the second-hand market. The inclusion of a commemorative element on a sports chronograph strikes a balance between historical significance and visual appeal. Demand for special editions from the Royal Oak range remains steady, particularly when the timepiece has a service history documented by the manufacturer.
Contents supplied and condition
This example is supplied with its presentation box, a welcome card from the management and the invoice for a full service carried out at Audemars Piguet in Geneva in December 2025. This thorough service, which included polishing, has given the watch a refurbished appearance.
