The history of this Audemars Piguet Royal Oak
The House of Audemars Piguet marked a decisive turning point in the history of haute horlogerie in 1972 with the creation of the Royal Oak. Designed by Gérald Genta, it was the first luxury sports watch in steel, imposing a disruptive design with its octagonal bezel with visible screws and integrated bracelet. In the early 1980s, the Manufacture decided to enhance this iconic model with classic complications. Reference 25594 was launched in 1984. It succeeded model 25572, affectionately nicknamed "The Owl" by collectors for its two symmetrical counters. The delicate addition of a moon phase at 6 o'clock radically transforms the watch's expression, giving it a smiling face, often referred to as the "Happy Face". This evolution demonstrates Audemars Piguet's technical mastery, capable of integrating demanding complications within the extra-flat, sporty silhouette of the Royal Oak.
Case, caliber and bracelet of this Royal Oak
This timepiece features a stainless steel case with a classic diameter of 36 mm and a thickness of 9.4 mm. Finishes precisely alternate satin-finish vertical brushing and mirror-polished chamfers, highlighting the complex architecture of the octagonal bezel secured by 8 white gold screws. The dial, protected by a sapphire crystal, features the famous "Petite Tapisserie" guilloché pattern in deep anthracite gray. It features applied hour-markers and sword-shaped hands in white gold, enhanced with luminescent material. The analog day and date display is perfectly balanced with the astronomical moon-phase indication. The movement is powered by the self-winding caliber 2224/2825, oscillating at a frequency of 28,800 vibrations per hour and offering a 40-hour power reserve. The set is completed by the integrated steel bracelet, whose characteristic links are extended by a secure folding clasp. Water resistance is guaranteed to 50 meters.
Why this Audemars Piguet watch
The reference 25594ST, particularly in this 36 mm configuration with its "SWISS MADE" transitional dial, occupies a prime position on the pre-owned market. Produced in limited quantities at the turn of the 2000s, it offers an exceptional balance between the historical dimension of Genta's design and the poetic charm of a traditional complication. Today, this "Mid-size" format is highly sought-after for its understated elegance, adapting with ease to both men's and women's wrists, far from the trend towards imposing diameters.
