5 brilliant-cut diamonds set in 14-carat yellow gold
In 1919, the engineer Marcel Tolkowsky published his calculations for the proportions of the 57-facet round brilliant cut, the cut featured here on 5 natural diamonds. This unsigned, second-hand ring features the diamonds set in a row, with an estimated total weight of 2.13 carats. Two of the stones are colourless and three are coloured, with colour grades ranging from F to H and up to Fancy Yellow, and clarity grades ranging from VVS2 to SI2. With similar diameters, the stones form a neat row on a 14-carat yellow gold setting, hallmarked 585.
Architecture and jewellery craftsmanship
Each diamond rests in an openwork double-gallery setting, open at the sides, which allows light to pass beneath the stone. The five settings run in succession along the top of the band and share their prongs – 12 round prongs in total. This shared-prong setting minimises the amount of metal between the stones and brings them as close together as possible. Set high, the brilliant-cut diamonds form a continuous line across the top of the finger and reflect light through their crown facets. The slender, polished band leaves plenty of space for this row of stones.
Why choose this second-hand piece
Finding five natural diamonds of similar weight today, matching them and then setting them requires a process of sorting and setting that drives up the price of a ring fresh from the workshop. As a second-hand piece, this ring features over 2 carats of natural diamonds, analysed by a gemmological laboratory, set in an existing mount. 14-carat gold, which has a higher alloy content than 18-carat gold, offers greater resistance to impact for jewellery worn frequently. Finally, the combination of white and coloured stones gives the design a variety of shades, a far cry from the uniformity of a classic half-wedding ring.
Contents and condition
The inside of the ring bears the 585 hallmark, confirming it is 14-carat gold, and the ring is size 54. It is in mint condition, with no visible signs of wear. It is supplied in a pink jewellery box with built-in lighting, along with its GCI Gemological Centres analysis report dated September 2026, which confirms that the diamonds are natural. As the stones are set, their weight is an estimate calculated by the laboratory.
