The vertical line of a diamond long necklace
This 18-carat white gold long necklace features a silhouette that originated in the 1920s, when straight-cut dresses allowed necklaces to hang down to the waist. Along the 80 cm chain, 18 brilliant-cut diamonds with a total weight of 0.74 carats, colour G and clarity VS, are set at regular intervals. It was originally sold by Bucherer, a jeweller founded in Lucerne in 1888, as attested by the valuation certificate issued by its Lausanne boutique. A pre-owned piece without a designer’s signature, it can be worn extended, with the row of diamonds cascading down the chest, or doubled into two loops close to the neck.
Architecture and jewellery craftsmanship
The forçat-link chain connects the 18 closed-set diamonds, each averaging around 0.04 carats. The closed-set setting encircles the round diamond with a fine gold band all the way round, protecting the stone’s edge and minimising snags on fabrics. Each diamond thus takes the form of a small, clear disc, identical from one end of the long necklace to the other, which catches the light with every movement. The G colour falls within the range of near-colourless whites, and the VS clarity indicates very slight inclusions, invisible to the naked eye. A white gold lobster clasp secures the necklace.
Why choose this second-hand long necklace
A long necklace with bezel-set diamonds requires meticulous craftsmanship, stone by stone, the cost of which is fully reflected in the price of a new piece of jewellery. Bucherer’s current collection features a long necklace in a similar style, set with 16 SI-clarity diamonds totalling 0.64 carats. This white gold long necklace features 18 stones, a higher carat weight and superior clarity, all for a fraction of that price. Its length allows it to be layered over a shorter necklace or worn on its own against a bare neckline.
