The Sugar Loaf, as seen by Paloma Picasso
The daughter of Pablo Picasso and Françoise Gilot, Paloma Picasso has been designing for Tiffany & Co. since the early 1980s. Her Sugar Stacks collection revives the sugar loaf cut, a square-based cabochon with straight sides rising towards a rounded top. This 18-carat yellow gold Sugar Stacks ring features an aquamarine of approximately 2 carats, with a clear, light sky-blue colour. A member of the beryl family, like the emerald, aquamarine takes its name from the Latin ‘aqua marina’, meaning ‘sea water’. Cut high, light passes through the stone across its entire thickness, giving it a deeper blue at the centre than at the edges. This pre-owned piece retains the design intended by the designer in its entirety.
Architecture and jewellery craftsmanship
The aquamarine rests in a square yellow gold setting, open at the sides with rounded cut-outs, allowing light to enter from below. Four tapered prongs, set at the corners, hold the stone by its edges and widen at their bases like petals. The band of the ring, a round-section band with a mirror-polished finish, joins the setting beneath the stone without any visible shoulder. No surrounding stones are added; the gold and the cabochon are sufficient for the design. When worn, the ring positions the stone high on the finger, and in profile its straight sides and domed shape are clearly visible.
Why choose this second-hand ring
This high-cut style retains a significant volume of stone relative to its surface area, whereas a faceted cut would remove more material, hence the presence and depth of colour of this cabochon. Choosing this pre-owned ring means acquiring a Tiffany & Co. creation on its original 18-carat yellow gold setting, with the House’s engraving intact. Refurbished by our workshop, it is ready to wear straight away.
