The strict geometry of the target motif
The target motif emerged during the Art Deco period in response to a quest for strict geometry and the visual optimisation of light. This jewellery-making technique relies on a skilful mastery of proportions to enhance the apparent size of the centre stone. This pre-owned piece features two brilliant-cut diamonds with an estimated total weight of 0.20 carats. These colourless centre stones are framed by a circular structure in 18-carat white gold, creating a striking contrast.
Architecture and jewellery craftsmanship
The design of the setting is based on a truncated cone profile, the back of which is openwork to allow light to pass through the back of the stones. At the heart of the design, a closed-set setting encircles the centre stone with a fine ribbon of polished metal, ensuring a secure hold and enhanced light reflection. The bezel features 16 accent diamonds totalling approximately 0.08 carats. These peripheral gemstones are secured using a classic grain setting, where small metal half-spheres hold each stone in place whilst adding texture to the surface of the earring.
Why these second-hand stud earrings
Choosing a pre-owned piece for such an essential design makes perfect sense from a heritage perspective. The combination of a closed setting and a grain setting requires a significant amount of workshop time in contemporary jewellery-making. This model features a total carat weight of approximately 0.30 carats and precise craftsmanship, offering excellent value for money compared to current manufacturing costs. A sensible purchase for a classic piece of jewellery.
