A drop of diamonds on 18-carat white gold
This 18-carat white gold pear-shaped ring features 9 brilliant-cut diamonds in an illusion setting, a technique in which the jeweller groups small stones together and fuses the prongs to form the silhouette of a pear-cut diamond. The shape, which traditional French jewellers referred to as a ‘pendeloque’, is encircled by a band of diamonds bringing the total weight to 0.17 carats. An unsigned second-hand piece, it combines the presence of a pear-shaped stone with the lightness of a pavé setting. Worn with the tip pointing towards the nail, the teardrop shape visually elongates the finger.
Architecture and jewellery craftsmanship
At the centre, the nine diamonds are held in place by shared prongs. A polished white gold band, open in a pear shape, frames this centre and tapers to a fine point at the base of the design. Around it, a border of small brilliant-cut diamonds is grain-set within a polished rim that follows the outline of the teardrop. The head rests on an openwork setting, supported by a V-shaped shoulder that tapers towards the body of the ring. The mirror-polished band has a slightly domed interior, making it comfortable to wear. These two levels of setting – prongs at the centre and grain setting around the edge – give the design a distinct relief and a continuous brilliance from one edge to the other.
Why choose this second-hand ring
A setting of this type requires extensive setting work, involving two techniques and several dozen calibrated stones fitted one by one. On the second-hand market, this craftsmanship can be found for a fraction of the price of a new piece, without compromising on the quality of the setting, which has been inspected by our jeweller. A pear-shaped ring of this size gives the finger the presence of a larger centre stone for a measured carat weight. Unsigned, it is chosen for its design, either as a pear-shaped engagement ring that is more discreet than a solitaire, or as a first diamond ring.
