The story behind this Tiffany & Co. Streamerica
Tiffany & Co. launched the Streamerica collection in the 1990s to pay homage to the American Streamline Moderne design movement of the 1930s. This range draws its inspiration from aeronautical engineering and the industrial design of that decade. The brushed metal surfaces and exposed hinges are reminiscent of the riveted fuselages of Douglas DC-3 aeroplanes or the streamlined bodies of Airstream caravans. Designed for travellers, this travel clock meets the need for a functional item whilst on the move. It stands out for its ability to fold away into a protective case before unfolding into a table stand, ensuring stability on a desk or bedside table.
Case, movement and strap of this Streamerica
This portable timepiece features an articulated structure made from solid, fully brushed stainless steel. When closed, the piece measures approximately 8 centimetres in length and forms a compact protective shell. When opened, it reveals a square display module incorporating a matt white circular dial beneath a flat mineral crystal. The hour track is marked with black Arabic numerals and luminescent oval hour markers. At the centre, three hands share the same axis. The hour and minute hands feature a straight profile with a Super-LumiNova insert. A third small hand is used to set the alarm. The watch is powered by a Swiss quartz movement, offering the precision expected of a travel timepiece. The back of the case reveals a notched crown for setting the time and alarm.
Why this Tiffany & Co. watch.
Acquiring this piece offers the opportunity to incorporate a creation with a sophisticated industrial design into one’s daily life. As the Streamerica range is no longer produced by the manufacturer, it attracts the interest of enthusiasts of unique mechanical objects. Its folding design adds a tactile dimension when handling it. It offers a mechanical alternative to today’s digital devices. Its availability on the second-hand market makes it a discerning choice for a lover of American design.
Contents and condition
This travel clock is supplied on its own. Its condition is very good for an item from this period. The brushed steel retains its original finish and shows only minimal marks resulting from the natural movement of the hinges when opened. The glass is intact and the dial is clean. The medallion on the back of the case still bears its protective clear plastic sticker with a red line through it, indicating that it has been handled with care.
