The story of this Zenith El Primero
In 1969, Zenith unveiled the first integrated high-frequency automatic chronograph in horological history. This mythical mechanical movement nearly disappeared for good during the quartz crisis of the 1970s. It was secretly saved by watchmaker Charles Vermot, who hid the plans, dies and production tools in the manufacture’s attics. Today, reference 03.2150.400/21.C706 pays vibrant tribute to the original, perfectly balanced proportions of that pivotal era. This chronograph captures the essence of historic design while featuring an anthracite grey dial that was particularly appreciated by Japanese collectors at the time of its initial release.
Case, calibre and strap of this El Primero
The stainless steel case measures exactly 38 mm in diameter. Its harmonious lines and fully polished profile frame a delicately domed sapphire crystal for optimal legibility. The sunray-finished anthracite dial catches the light and highlights 3 light snailed sub-dials dedicated to 12-hour and 30-minute chronograph timing as well as running small seconds. The transparent case back reveals the openworked rotor and the column-wheel chronograph calibre 400. This complex mechanism comprises 278 components and beats at the high frequency of 36,000 vibrations per hour while delivering a 50-hour power reserve. The watch is fitted with a grey alligator leather strap and a steel pin buckle. Water-resistance is rated to 100 metres.
Why this Zenith watch
Mechanical chronograph collectors often favour this historic 38 mm size, which sits comfortably on any wrist. This edition clearly stands apart from the brand’s traditional tri-colour dials. Its dark aesthetic brings elegant restraint and rare daily versatility. Initially acclaimed in the Japanese market, renowned for demanding classic proportions, this specific configuration is no longer available in the current catalogue. It therefore represents an excellent opportunity to acquire a sharp, well-balanced piece that will delight lovers of fine mechanics.
