The optical geometry of the halo setting
The halo setting draws its functional origins from the aesthetics of the Art Deco period, an era when jewellers sought technical solutions to protect the central gemstones whilst maximising their perceived reflective surface area. This pre-owned piece, crafted by Weck’s Lausanne workshops, exemplifies this classical architectural mastery. At the centre of the 18-carat yellow gold setting rests a 1.15-carat natural brilliant-cut diamond. Certified as colour I and clarity VS1, this centre stone boasts excellent transparency and no inclusions visible to the naked eye. The solid yellow gold alloy provides the structure for the piece, lending it a stately presence on the finger.
Architecture and jewellery craftsmanship
The integrity of the setting is based on a multi-tiered construction. The central diamond is securely held in place by a 4-prong setting with half-spherical tips. This central setting is raised by an openwork basket, a technical design essential for allowing light to enter through the culet and pass through the gem. Surrounding this centre is a pavé-set crown that flows seamlessly along the shoulder. This peripheral pavé setting comprises a total of 0.58 carats of brilliant-cut diamonds. The gemmological selection of these secondary stones is rigorous, featuring G colour and VVS1 clarity, ensuring complete visual uniformity with the centre stone.
Why this second-hand halo ring
The acquisition of this piece of fine jewellery was a purely rational decision. It features a total diamond weight exceeding 1.70 carats. Creating such a design today – which requires the precise calibration of a setting surrounding a 1.15-carat centre stone – would demand a substantial production budget in a jewellery workshop. Opting for the second-hand market allows one to access the certified craftsmanship of a renowned house and a substantial centre stone, whilst keeping the investment under control. The setting offers remarkable stability and presence.
