The history of this S.T. Dupont Ligne 2 lighter
S.T. Dupont has been producing travel accessories and silverware since 1872. The Ligne 2 model was launched in the 1970s. It was designed to meet a demand for a practical accessory with rectangular proportions. The sound emitted when opened was initially merely a coincidence resulting from the assembly of the brass parts. The brand subsequently standardised this metallic sound, which is now tested by a craftsman before the item leaves the workshop. Reference 16766 features the Pointe de Diamant finish.
Case, mechanism and finish of this Ligne 2
Machined from a solid block of brass, this lighter features a side-hinged cover. The metal is coated with a silver plating. The broad sides and the cover are engraved with the ‘Pointe de Diamant’ pattern. This guilloché pattern forms small pyramids in relief. The edges and base have a smooth surface. Inside, the mechanism is operated by a ribbed cylindrical rotor located on the right-hand side. The flame adjustment and access to the gas valve are provided by two screw-on caps beneath the base.
Why this S.T. Dupont lighter
This piece from the 1990s features a classic design for the brand. The silver plating develops a natural patina, a look sought after by patina enthusiasts, unlike modern palladium, which remains neutral over time. The Pointe de Diamant pattern provides a uniform texture. Offered at a price below the catalogue price of 1,150 CHF for an equivalent current model, this accessory represents a viable option.
Contents and condition
The lighter is supplied with its red box, inner case and warranty card, stamped in May 1995 by the Davidoff retailer in Geneva. The item shows signs of wear. The silver has oxidised, causing the metal to darken in the recesses of the design and on the smooth surfaces. There are micro-scratches on the polished base. The lighter is in working order and the hinge is firm. Our craftsmen can polish it on request.
