The history of the S.T. Dupont Classique pen
Founded in Paris in the 19th century by Simon Tissot-Dupont, S.T. Dupont built its reputation on its lighters and writing instruments. The Classique was created in the 1970s in response to a request from Jacqueline Kennedy, who wanted a pen to match her Dupont lighter. The House presents it as the first luxury writing instrument. This second-hand pen is the capped version, featuring black Chinese lacquer on the upper section and a gold-plated barrel.
Materials, dimensions and finishes
Chinese lacquer is a natural resin applied by hand in successive layers, and S.T. Dupont claims to be the only House that still masters this ancestral craft. Two gold-plated rings frame the cap; the lower ring bears the S.T. Dupont signature engraved in cursive, whilst the L-shaped clip sits atop the cap. The gold-plated barrel is engraved with regular vertical flutes that catch the light in fine lines. The black section, encircled by a gold ring, unscrews to access the refill. This convertible design accommodates either a ballpoint or a rollerball refill. When closed, the pen measures nearly 14 cm.
Why choose this second-hand S.T. Dupont accessory
This version with a gold-plated cap and barrel is no longer listed in the S.T. Dupont catalogue, and the second-hand market remains the only way to obtain it. Chinese lacquer, renowned for its resistance to scratches and heat, explains why the cap has held up so well over the years.
Contents and condition
The pen is supplied complete in its red S.T. Dupont case with a beige interior, along with its international warranty card, booklet and Chinese lacquer certificate. It is fitted with an S.T. Dupont ballpoint refill with a medium tip and comes with two rollerball refills, one in brown ink and the other in blue ink. Having been used, it shows slight signs of wear, particularly on the black section, whilst the lacquer and gilding remain in good condition.
