The history of the S.T. Dupont Classique pen
Founded in Paris in 1872 by Simon Tissot Dupont, S.T. Dupont first made a name for itself in the field of trunks and travel leather goods, before turning its attention to luxury lighters with the Ligne 1 range. Jacqueline Kennedy, who owned a gold Ligne 1, wanted a matching pen, and the House designed a slender pen for her, the barrel of which echoed the vertical guilloché patterns of the lighter. This pre-owned ballpoint pen retains the original slim profile, which is slimmer than the unisex reissue and thicker than the models S.T. Dupont offers today.
Materials, dimensions and finishes
The gold-plated barrel is adorned with fine vertical fluting running from the cap to the cone. This smooth, polished cone tapers to a silver-coloured metal tip. The hinged clip frames a black lacquer insert. The S.T. Dupont signature, the word ‘Paris’ and the maker’s mark are engraved beneath the clip, at the junction, and the same mark appears on the top of the cap. The pen unscrews in the middle to provide access to the refill. Along its entire length, the fluting refracts the light into fine parallel lines.
Why choose this second-hand S.T. Dupont accessory
The current version of the Classique has different proportions and a different clip, and the original slim version is now only available second-hand. This example comes with its original components – case, label, warranty card and booklet – and is ready to be given as a gift as it is.
Contents and condition
The pen is supplied in its red S.T. Dupont case with gold trim, lined in beige, along with the brand’s numbered label, its international warranty card and its booklet. It is in good condition and has been tested; it writes normally. The barrel shows visible signs of oxidation, particularly on the fluting of the lower section and on the cone. These affect the appearance of the gold plating but do not affect its functionality.
