The history of this Rolex Oyster Perpetual 41
Rolex has its roots in the pursuit of precision and reliability. The Oyster Perpetual collection exemplifies this mechanical approach. The reference 134303 discreetly marks a historic milestone. In 1926, Rolex unveiled the Oyster case, the world’s first waterproof system. This innovation was put to the test the following year on the wrist of Mercedes Gleitze during her swim across the English Channel. 100 years on, this commemorative edition features the inscription ‘100 YEARS’ on its dial to mark this invention. This timepiece combines a technical heritage with contemporary craftsmanship.
Case, movement and bracelet of this Oyster Perpetual 41
The 41 mm case combines Oystersteel with 18-carat yellow gold to form the yellow Rolesor configuration. The smooth, domed gold bezel surrounds a sapphire crystal protecting a slate-grey dial with a sunburst finish. This dial is punctuated by green squares positioned above the raised yellow gold applied hour markers. The absence of complications ensures visual symmetry. The self-winding mechanical Calibre 3230 movement drives the three central hands and offers a power reserve of 70 hours. This chronometer operates at a frequency of 4 Hz and is water-resistant to 100 metres. The watch is secured by an Oyster bracelet with three links, brushed and polished on the edges, fastened with an Oysterclasp folding clasp.
Why this Rolex watch
The appeal of this design lies in its balance and symbolic value. Commemorative editions from the Geneva-based manufacturer continue to enjoy sustained demand amongst collectors. The combination of brushed grey metal, yellow gold and touches of green gives this piece its own distinct identity. The current market makes it difficult to source these models through traditional channels. Acquiring this anniversary model offers the opportunity to own a piece of watchmaking history whilst retaining a versatile aesthetic.
