The history of this Rolex Cosmograph Daytona
The Geneva-based Maison has always maintained a carnal link with speed and asphalt. Born in 1963 to time the exploits of drivers on the legendary Floridian beach, this icon has endured the decades with unalterable superbness. The major turning point came at the turn of the millennium. In 2000, the brand unveiled reference 116520 and at the same time signalled its total manufacturing independence. No more borrowed calibres. The engineers redesigned the chronograph movement from scratch to make it as lean as possible. This streamlined architecture freed up precious space in the case for a much larger barrel. A technical revolution that propelled autonomy to new heights for the era and consecrated the absolute mastery of the Manufacture.
Case, calibre and bracelet of this Cosmograph Daytona
Forged from a block of Oystersteel 904L steel, the 40 mm-diameter armour unfurls sublime aerodynamic lines. Its deep black dial is enhanced by 3 azure counters with silver rings that catch the light with dramatic intensity. A flat, totally transparent sapphire crystal flushes the massive polished steel tachometric bezel. Beneath the hermetically sealed caseback beats the fearsome self-winding Calibre 4130, a mechanical heart composed of 290 elements pulsating at a frequency of 28,800 vibrations per hour. This cutting-edge chronograph offers a 72-hour power reserve and is water-resistant to 100 metres thanks to its screw-down Triplock crown. The whole is securely fastened to the wrist by the robust Oyster bracelet reference 78590, alternating brushed and polished finishes, and secured by an Oysterlock folding clasp incorporating the Easylink comfort extension.
Why this Rolex watch
Acquiring such a pre-ceramic chronograph on the second-hand market is pure collector's instinct. Withdrawn from the catalogue in 2016, this generation embodies the raw charm of all-steel, a virile, one-piece aesthetic that is extremely popular today. The icy contrast between the dark dial and the mirror-like reflections of the metal offers a perfect visual balance. This is a timepiece with status that asserts itself with subtle arrogance, a watchmaking value that transcends fleeting fashions. Its solid quotation testifies to the unwavering passion of enthusiasts for great mechanical legends capable of combining extreme refinement with a sporting vocation.
