The story behind this Roger Dubuis Excalibur
The Roger Dubuis Excalibur bears the hallmark of a Maison founded in Geneva in 1995 by watchmaker Roger Dubuis and Carlos Dias. From 1999 onwards, its first in-house movements were all certified by the Geneva Seal, a standard the brand still upholds for each of its calibres. The Excalibur collection was launched in 2005, the year in which Roger Dubuis presented its first skeletonised calibre. Legend links its name to a medieval sword that a client presented to Carlos Dias, in a nod to the two founders, who were seen as the knights of fine watchmaking. The notched bezel and triple lugs have since remained the hallmark of the collection. This Excalibur 42 in white gold, reference RDDBEX0507, incorporates these design elements around a fully openworked movement.
Case, calibre and strap of this Excalibur
The 42 mm case in 18-carat white gold features a polished bezel, notched all the way round, with brushed sides extending into the triple lugs. The anti-reflective sapphire crystal reveals the RD820SQ calibre, which serves as the dial. This automatic movement with a micro-rotor comprises 166 components and 35 jewels, beats at 28,800 vibrations per hour and offers a 60-hour power reserve. Its skeletonised bridges form a star – a motif unique to Excalibur skeleton watches – whilst the micro-rotor winds the mainspring without obscuring the mechanics. The dark grey bezel features the minute track and polished, rhodium-plated hour markers, against which the solid, facetted hands stand out clearly above the gear train. The sapphire crystal caseback, edged in white gold, reveals the other side of the calibre, and the case is water-resistant to 3 bar, or 30 metres. The watch is fitted with a black leather strap with grey topstitching, the underside of which features yellow topstitching and a yellow edge, fastened by a Roger Dubuis-signed double folding clasp.
Why this Roger Dubuis watch
Every component of the RD820SQ calibre is hand-finished to the standards of the Geneva Seal, a craftsmanship that is evident from every angle on a movement that is openworked throughout. The micro-rotor, housed within the movement’s plane, allows for an automatic calibre just 6.38 mm thick, without an oscillating weight covering the caseback. On the second-hand market, this white gold Excalibur offers a certified in-house movement and a precious metal case, inspected by our partner watchmakers and covered by our warranty, for a price well below that of a new piece.
Contents and condition
The watch is supplied in its Roger Dubuis box with its inner box, accompanied by the brand’s lacquered wooden care box, which contains a cleaning cloth, a brush and accessories. It is sold without a certificate. The balance bridge is personalised with three initials, unique to this particular timepiece. In good condition, the watch has micro-scratches on the polished bezel and signs of wear on the case, clasp and strap, which do not affect its functioning. Polishing by our partner watchmakers is available on request prior to sale, to restore the case and bezel to their original shine.
