The story behind this Omega x Swatch MoonSwatch
The association between the group's two entities has shaken up the contemporary watchmaking landscape by paying an accessible tribute to the legendary Speedmaster. The reference SO33M106 celebrates a fundamental date in the conquest of space. March 1, 1965 marks the precise day on which NASA officially qualified Omega's chronograph for all its manned space missions, following a series of destructive thermal and vibration tests. To commemorate this 60th anniversary, the watchmakers took the astonishing creative step of modifying the internal mechanics of the timepiece. Instead of the classic 60 minutes, the sub-counter at 10 o'clock records up to 19 hours, while the one at 2 o'clock measures 65 minutes. This deliberate technical anomaly forces the dial to display the year 1965 at all times. It's a very rare narrative approach that firmly anchors this edition in a strong historical dimension while retaining a playful approach.
Case, calibre and bracelet of this MoonSwatch 1965
The asymmetrical 42 mm-diameter case takes up the exact architecture of its illustrious predecessor, including the famous twisted lugs. It is fashioned in grey bioceramic, an innovative alloy fusing ceramic powder and bio-based materials to offer a matt feel and great lightness on the wrist. The double-level white dial contrasts sharply with the fixed black bezel, topped by its famous tachometric scale. The sword-shaped central hands hover above rectangular hour-markers coated with luminescent material to ensure absolute legibility in the dark. The watch is powered by an ETA quartz chronograph movement assembled on 4 jewels. Water-resistant to 30 metres, this edition is mounted on a technical grey velcro strap embellished with light-coloured stitching, directly inspired by the straps worn by astronauts over their thick suits.
Why this Omega x Swatch watch
This particular iteration stands out very clearly within the collection with its immaculate dial and totally atypical counters. Its distribution is based on restricted availability, offered only in a very limited number of physical boutiques around the world. It offers the opportunity to acquire a unique and intellectually stimulating interpretation of the space myth. Its contrasting aesthetic is a natural match for any everyday outfit. The addition of an extra rubber strap, supplied with the watch, radically transforms its look to give it an even sportier and more contemporary visual identity.
