The history of this Omega Constellation
The history of the Constellation collection began in 1952 to celebrate Omega’s chronometric achievements. However, the distinctive aesthetic of this reference 1202.30.00 has its roots in 1982, in the designs of Carol Didisheim. She introduced the so-called ‘Manhattan’ architecture, recognisable by its four iconic prongs. Originally, these metal projections were not merely a stylistic detail, but served a genuine technical purpose. They were used to press the sapphire crystal firmly against the case gaskets to ensure the watch’s water resistance. With technological advances, this mechanical requirement has disappeared, but Omega has retained this distinctive aesthetic feature. This timepiece epitomises 1990s watchmaking, combining fluid geometry with a flat profile that adorns the wrist with understated elegance.
Case, movement and strap of this Constellation
The 35.5 mm tonneau-shaped case combines brushed stainless steel with the warmth of 18-carat yellow gold, used for the bezel engraved with Roman numerals and the famous side claws. Its light-coloured dial features a subtle textured pattern that catches the light and lends a pleasing depth beneath the sapphire crystal. The hours are marked by raised yellow gold baton hour-markers, over which dauphine hands sweep. A window at 3 o’clock discreetly displays the current date. Beneath the solid case back, stamped with the Geneva Observatory medallion, beats the Calibre 1120. This self-winding mechanical movement, certified as a chronometer, offers a power reserve of 44 hours and oscillates at a frequency of 28,800 vibrations per hour. It comprises 23 jewels, ensuring rigorous precision. The watch is mounted on a supple integrated bracelet, alternating between wide, flat steel links and slender cylindrical hinges in 18-carat yellow gold, fastened with a folding clasp.
