The story behind the MING 37.09 Bluefin
MING was founded by Ming Thein, a renowned photographer and designer. The creation of the 37.09 Bluefin was in response to a specific technical challenge. The aim was to design a diving watch capable of withstanding depths of 600 metres whilst maintaining compact proportions. The 37.09 model achieves this by reinterpreting the Super-Compressor architecture. The technical innovation lies in the removal of the usual screw-down crowns. The engineers have developed a system of three safety seals that allows the inner bezel to be adjusted whilst underwater. This approach frees the design from the usual constraints of extreme diving watches and ensures a smooth user experience.
Case, movement and strap of this 37.09 Bluefin
The stainless steel case measures 38 mm in diameter and is 12.8 mm thick. The finishes alternate between a polished bezel and brushed sides. The dial is crafted from metallised sapphire with a deep midnight blue centre surrounded by a light blue rotating flange. The absence of sub-dials or numerals enhances the purity of the design. The sword-shaped hands and hour markers are filled with luminescent material. The open sapphire crystal case back reveals the movement. This is the SW300.M1 calibre, modified for the brand with anthracite finishes and a black oscillating weight. It offers a 50-hour power reserve and operates at a frequency of 4 Hz. The blue rubber strap is supple and integrates with the case via curved quick-release buckles. It fastens with a signed pin buckle.
Why this MING watch
This timepiece catches the eye with its reimagined take on the diving watch. MING produces limited runs and each launch sells out quickly. Finding this model on the second-hand market allows you to acquire a technical timepiece without the initial waiting times. The balance between high water resistance and a 38 mm diameter makes it a versatile sports watch. Its aesthetic, characterised by contrasting shades of blue and the depth of the sapphire dial, breaks away from the sector’s traditional conventions.
