The history of this L. Kendall Chronograph
Larcum Kendall occupies a unique place in the history of marine timekeeping. This 18th-century London-based watchmaker was commissioned by the Board of Longitude to design navigation instruments of the utmost precision. His most famous creation remains the K1 chronometer carried by Captain James Cook on his expedition to the Pacific. Cook himself described this instrument as a trusted companion. L. Kendall revives this heritage through contemporary timepieces. This stainless steel chronograph draws on maritime-inspired design elements and features a robust movement.
Case, movement and strap of this chronograph
This model features a stainless steel case with a design that alternates between polished and brushed surfaces. The oversized crown, adorned with a blue insert, makes it easy to grip and is reminiscent of historic observation watches. Protected by an anti-reflective sapphire crystal, the dial reveals a multi-layered design. The central section in brown mother-of-pearl contrasts with the outer ring and the blue sub-dials. The skeletonised hands are accompanied by sub-dial hands finished with a counterweight in the shape of a ship’s anchor. The date window is positioned asymmetrically between 4 and 5 o’clock. The transparent case back reveals the self-winding mechanical calibre based on the Valjoux 7750 architecture. This movement beats at a frequency of 4 Hz and guarantees a power reserve of approximately 42 hours, with water resistance tested to 100 metres. The watch is fitted with a textured brown leather strap, embellished with a sextant-shaped metal insert and secured by a steel folding clasp.
