The history of this Jaeger-LeCoultre Reverso
Jaeger-LeCoultre designed the Reverso in 1931 to meet a specific set of specifications, namely to protect the crystal of the watches worn by British officers during polo matches in India. Its pivoting case quickly became a technical and aesthetic hallmark. With reference 296.8.74, the manufacture launched the Gran’Sport range in the early 2000s, giving this classic a decidedly sporty look. This line is distinguished by the inclusion of a textured rubber strap – a genuine first for the model – whilst retaining the geometric architecture of the original case.
Case, movement and strap of this Gran'Sport
This reversible stainless steel case measures 25 mm in width, featuring a polished finish on the front and a straight-brushed finish on the back. The silver dial, protected by a sapphire crystal, features a guilloché centre and a minute track accented with red hour markers. It incorporates a small seconds sub-dial at 6 o’clock and a day/night indicator at 12 o’clock. On the reverse, the case reveals a setting of brilliant-cut diamonds along the bevelled edges, offering an immediate transition from daytime elegance to evening sophistication. The watch is powered by the hand-wound Calibre 864, guaranteeing a power reserve of 48 hours. The black rubber strap is fitted with a steel folding clasp with a safety mechanism.
Why this Jaeger-LeCoultre watch
This version of the Gran’Sport Dame is an excellent choice for fans of the brand. It combines the durability of steel and rubber with the subtlety of concealed gem-setting – a balance rarely found on the second-hand market. The inclusion of a mechanical movement in a model of this size highlights the watch’s high standards of craftsmanship, whilst its modest 25 mm case diameter ensures it is very comfortable for everyday wear.
