The history of this IWC Aquatimer Automatic
This IWC Aquatimer Automatic belongs to a line of watches first produced in Schaffhausen in 1967. That year, the company unveiled the Aquatimer, reference 812AD, its first watch designed for diving, water-resistant to 200 metres. Its diving bezel is positioned beneath the crystal, protected from impacts that might dislodge it whilst diving. IWC has never strayed from this principle. In 2014, it took the form of the SafeDive system, in which an outer bezel controls the inner bezel and prevents the dive time from being extended by mistake. The generation launched in 2022, to which the reference IW328801 belongs, retains this mechanism in a 42 mm case and features a in-house movement with a 5-day power reserve.
Case, calibre and strap of this Aquatimer Automatic
The 42 mm stainless steel case, 14.1 mm thick, is water-resistant to 30 bar, equivalent to 300 metres, thanks to its screw-down crown and solid case back engraved with a stylised fish. Its satin-finished outer bezel surrounds the blue inner bezel, which is graduated beneath a domed sapphire crystal treated with anti-reflective coating on both sides. The blue sunburst dial features applied hour markers and luminescent hands, a date window at 3 o’clock and a central seconds hand with an orange tip. The calibre 32111, an IWC in-house self-winding movement, beats at 28,800 vibrations per hour and comprises 163 components. It offers a 120-hour power reserve and a seconds-stopping mechanism for precise time-setting. The 22 mm blue rubber strap, with a grid-patterned texture, is attached via the EasX-CHANGE quick-change system and fastens with an IWC-branded steel pin buckle.
Why this IWC watch
The Aquatimer Automatic is ideal for anyone looking for a fully-fledged diving watch without compromising on everyday wear. The two bezels ensure reliable dive time tracking, and the five-day power reserve means you can leave it aside for a whole weekend without having to wind it. The EasX-CHANGE system allows you to change the strap in just a few simple steps, switching to another compatible strap from the brand. At 14.1 mm thick and water-resistant to 300 metres, the case remains compact enough to slip under a shirt cuff. Purchased second-hand, this recent model also retains its manufacturer’s warranty for several years, a tangible benefit for the buyer.
