The history of this Hermès Grand Apparat scarf
The House of Hermès unveiled the Grand Apparat motif in 1962 under the precise stroke of illustrator Jacques Eudel. This designer drew his inspiration from the national stud farms to faithfully reproduce the so-called d'Aumont harnessing used during 19th-century royal parades. This piece is a vibrant tribute to the original craft of Thierry Hermès, master saddler. The central illustration features a majestic caparisoned horse, bearing witness to an era when a crew's presence reflected the power of its owner.
Fabric, printing and finishes of this Grand Apparat
The architecture of this creation is based on a square format measuring 90 cm on a side. The backing is a pure silk twill offering a ribbed texture and a heavy fall. The design is based around a large central medallion surrounded by 4 equestrian portraits and luxurious parade saddles at the corners. Heavy braided ropes give structure to the ensemble. The colour palette contrasts a deep royal blue with a luminous sky blue enhanced by white and golden yellow. The edges are meticulously rolled to the right side and sewn by hand in the great tradition of the manufacture.
Why this Hermès scarf
This vintage model is a veritable textile archive. The presence of the copyright symbol indicates an edition dating back to the 1970s, offering a historical aura much sought after by fans of the brand. The geometric balance of the composition reveals a variety of aesthetics depending on the type of fold adopted. Tied around the neck or delicately hung from a bag, this silk expresses a timeless classicism and asserts an elegance rooted in the equestrian world.
