The ‘Selles à Housse’ square scarf by Christiane Vauzelles
Designed by Christiane Vauzelles in the late 1960s, the ‘Selles à Housse’ square scarf draws inspiration from the equestrian world that has guided Hermès since 1837. Diagonally across the design, four ceremonial saddles rest beneath their covers, embroidered with golden foliage; two are burgundy and two olive green, each with its own stirrups. In the centre, two stirrup leathers cross around a stirrup, their loops marked with small hearts. The ecru background is dotted with fleurs-de-lis and punctuated by large gilded Hs, whilst four medallions occupy the corners of a frame made of twisted trimmings.
Material, dimensions and finishes
The square measures 90 x 90 cm, the classic size for Hermès squares. It is printed on a silk twill whose diagonal weave remains clearly visible beneath the colours, and its hem is hand-rolled. The colour palette combines the brown of the border, the ecru of the background, the gold of the ornamentation, burgundy and olive green. The title appears in a cartouche at the bottom of the design, with the ‘Hermès Paris’ signature in the bottom right-hand corner. Whether tied round the neck, draped over the shoulders or folded into a headband, the 90 cm size always reveals part of the design.

The scarf comes in its orange Hermès box with a brown border, stamped ‘Au Panache Hermès, Bahnhofstrasse 31, Zurich’, along with its tissue paper. The silk is in very good condition, with no visible stains or snags, and the colours remain vibrant whilst the hem is well-preserved. There are only a few storage creases on the fabric. The box shows slight scuffing on the edges of the lid.
