The bezel setting of these drop earrings
In 1919, the engineer Marcel Tolkowsky published the proportions of the modern brilliant cut, calculated to reflect as much light as possible back to the eye through 57 facets. These drop earrings incorporate this principle with 10 brilliant-cut diamonds, including 2 centre stones of approximately 0.20 ct each, for a total of approximately 0.52 ct. Each main stone is set in a bezel setting, the oldest setting technique, where a wall of polished metal surrounds the diamond and protects its girdle. The setting is in 18-carat grey gold, also known as white gold, and its cool hue enhances the whiteness of the stones. A pre-owned, unsigned piece, the pair feels light on the earlobe, whether worn during the day or in the evening.
Architecture and jewellery craftsmanship
Above the bezel setting, a hinged line features four brilliant-cut diamonds of approximately 0.015 ct each, totalling 0.06 ct per earring and 0.12 ct for the pair. Each stone is held by four prongs within its own openwork setting, and the elements pivot on one another. This articulation allows the lower diamond to sway slightly beneath the earlobe, where it catches the light from multiple angles. The cylindrical setting has a mirror polish. Each earring measures approximately 1 cm in length and fastens with a post and a winged clasp.
Why choose these second-hand earrings
Creating such a pair today requires 10 calibrated diamonds, 2 closed settings tailored to the stone and a hand-assembled hinged chain – workshop craftsmanship that significantly drives up the price of a recent creation. On the second-hand market, this craftsmanship becomes accessible without compromising on the metal or the setting. The carat weight of 0.52 ct remains modest – striking enough to catch the eye, yet discreet enough for everyday wear. The absence of a designer’s signature refocuses the value on what really matters: the stones and their craftsmanship.
