The story of this Graf von Faber-Castell Pen of the Year 2007
Each year, Graf von Faber-Castell celebrates the most extraordinary materials through its prestigious collection. By exploring the caprices of nature, the manufacture unveiled the Graf von Faber-Castell Pen of the Year 2007 reference 14 50 40. This edition limited its production to the sole calendar year 2007. The fascinating anecdote of this model lies in its barrel crafted from fossilised wood originating from Brazil. More than 200 million years ago, entire forests were buried beneath volcanic ash. Mineral-rich fluids slowly replaced the organic matter to transform the wood into an authentic semi-precious stone. Faced with the extreme hardness of this now mineral material, the brand’s master woodturners had to rely on the expertise of the Herbert Stephan lapidary manufacture. Founded in the 15th century, this prestigious cutting workshop machined and polished each facet with diamond to reveal the soul of the stone.
Architecture, nib and attributes of this Pen of the Year 2007
The design of this magnum format commands a remarkable presence with a closed length of around 137 mm and a diameter of 15 mm. Its octagonal barrel reveals the natural shades of petrified wood ranging from ochre to deep black. The mirror brilliance of the stone matches wonderfully with the heavily platinum-plated solid metal trim. The slender clip, forged from a single block, articulates on an internal spring mechanism to preserve delicate pocket fabrics. The platinum-plated section naturally guides the fingers towards a superb M-size two-tone 18-carat solid gold nib. This nib bears the finely chiselled heraldic emblem of the manufacture and a hand-applied rhodium mask. An ingenious integrated piston-filling mechanism operates with absolute fluidity by unscrewing the knurled end cap engraved with the year of edition.
