The story of this Graf von Faber-Castell Pen of the Year 2006
Each year, Graf von Faber-Castell celebrates nature and artistic craftsmanship through an exceptional limited edition. The Pen of the Year 2006 model, bearing the reference 14 50 30, embodies this quest for the extraordinary by combining a precious wood with a fossil material of absolute rarity. To create this piece, produced in 2000 examples worldwide, the manufacture called upon Jürgen Schott, respected master of the Odenwald sculptors' guild. The technical challenge was immense. It consisted in extracting fragments of Siberian woolly mammoth ivory, buried and preserved in the permafrost for more than 10000 years, in order to work them with millimetric precision. These inlays had to integrate perfectly into the heart of a noble wooden framework. This artisanal feat makes this instrument far more than a simple writing tool; it becomes an authentic fragment of geological history shaped by the hand of man.
Architecture, nib and attributes of this Pen of the Year 2006
The majestic proportions of this pen unfold across a length of 137 mm when closed. Its particularly substantial body, weighing 72 grams with its cap, is meticulously sculpted from deep brown Macassar ebony wood. The latter is delicately inlaid with 6 slats of mammoth ivory finely textured with a natural pattern. The organic contrast between the dark warmth of the wood and the ancient clarity of the ivory is enhanced by the cool brilliance of the platinum-plated metal elements. The heavy cap, crowned with the family coat of arms of the manufacture, houses an articulated clip on an extremely robust double spring. Once opened, the 132 mm length reveals a cylindrical section in polished metal providing a cool and stately contact. At the end of this grip zone lies an imposing M-size two-tone 18-carat solid gold nib. Subtly engraved with the coat of arms and partially rhodium-plated, it ensures a regular and generous ink flow. Filling is carried out by an integrated piston mechanism operated by a platinum-plated knob cleverly concealed at the rear end of the barrel.
