A Cartier Trinity ring from the ‘Les Must’ period
Designed by Louis Cartier in 1924, the Trinity features three intertwined gold bands that roll freely into one another. Jean Cocteau wore two on his little finger from the early 1930s onwards. This pre-owned Cartier Trinity ring belongs to a generation predating the current collection. Its rose gold band is engraved on the outside with ‘les must de Cartier’, the signature of the line launched by the House in the 1970s. The other two bands are in yellow gold and white gold, creating a three-gold composition, all in 18-carat gold.
Architecture and jewellery craftsmanship
Each band is 3.5 mm wide, the same width as the classic model in the current collection. The profile is domed on the outside and flat on the inside, allowing the rings to slide against one another without snagging. The outer surfaces are mirror-polished, whilst the inner surfaces are satin-finished. The engraving in cursive script runs along the top of the rose gold band. With the slightest movement of the hand, the three bands roll over one another and the rose gold alternately passes over the yellow gold and the white gold.
Why choose this pre-owned ring
The ‘Les Must de Cartier’ engraving no longer appears on the Trinity rings currently available in-store. It gives this vintage Trinity a period-specific detail that a new piece does not offer, whilst retaining the proportions of the classic model. As a second-hand piece, it provides access to a refurbished Cartier creation at a lower price than a new Trinity. In size 60, it can be worn just as easily on the ring finger of a man’s hand as on a woman’s, or on the little finger, as Cocteau used to do.
Contents and condition
The inside of the rose-gold ring bears the 750 hallmark and the French guarantee’s eagle’s head mark, certifying that it is 18-carat gold. The ring is size 60 and cannot be resized; the ring size should therefore be checked when trying it on in-store. Refurbished by our artisan jeweller, it has been polished and inspected, and its three bands have a uniform polish across their entire surface. It is supplied in a The Swiss Collector box.
