The history of this Cartier Tonneau Dual Time
The House of Cartier has always been able to impose its architectural vision on the world of watchmaking. Created in 1906, the shape of the Tonneau watch was a brilliant ergonomic response to an era dominated by round pocket watches. Louis Cartier imagined an elongated, curved line that naturally followed the curve of the wrist. Later, during the boom in transatlantic travel, the Paris workshops designed the Cartier Tonneau Dual Time to meet the expectations of a demanding international clientele. Rather than simply adding an extra hand to read a second time zone, the Manufacture opted for a bold aesthetic solution by housing 2 separate movements in a single case. This makes it possible to display 2 totally independent time zones and to set offsets for complex distant destinations.
Case, calibre and bracelet of this Tonneau Dual Time
Forged in 18-carat yellow gold, the case measures 26 mm wide for a total distance of 46 mm from end to end. Its slim 7.5 mm thickness ensures absolute discretion under a shirt sleeve. The polished surface catches the light elegantly, while the solid caseback has a delicate rectilinear brushing. The cream opaline dial is divided into 2 symmetrical reading zones, meticulously structured by a central minute track and fine black Roman numerals arranged in a fan-shape. The 4 glaive-shaped hands crafted in blued steel respond subtly to the 2 circular-grained crowns. The latter are positioned on the right-hand side and each set with an iconic sapphire cabochon. Beneath this magnificent dial, the timepiece is driven by 2 independent quartz calibres offering a battery life of approximately 24 to 36 months. The water-resistance remains symbolic on this dressy creation, protecting the whole from accidental splashes. The strap is fastened by a midnight-blue alligator leather strap closed by a gold pin buckle evoking a capital C.
Why this Cartier watch
This model produced during the 1980s or 1990s embodies a fascinating transition period for the manufacture, heralding the beginnings of the famous Cartier Paris Private Collection. The presence of the precious Paris typography printed at the bottom of the dial is a detail particularly sought after by discerning connoisseurs. It bears witness to the historical heritage of the French workshops before the current wording was systematically adopted. Opting for this second-hand version with a double spindle means acquiring a timepiece with a timeless design, whose horological complexity is based on the elegance of its asymmetrical construction rather than on a simple accumulation of gears. This unique arrangement gives it a singular charm on the wrist, affirming its owner's taste for objects with a real soul.
Delivered contents and condition
This vintage timepiece comes with an exclusive courtesy box signed The Swiss Collector. The original documents and original box no longer accompany the watch. The overall condition remains particularly satisfactory for a creation from this decade. The yellow gold case was repolished by a watchmaker before being offered for sale, restoring it to its original lustre while respecting the integrity of its curved lines. There is a scratch on the crystal at 9 o'clock, a detail that testifies to the watch's history without hindering the reading of time. The midnight blue leather strap has discreet flex creases on the inside, while remaining solid and aesthetically in harmony with the piece.
