This 18-carat yellow gold Cartier Spartacus necklace belongs to a range of chains that the House was already producing in the early 1990s, when gold was worn on its own, without a pendant or gemstone. Its forçat link design features elongated rectangular links with rounded corners, approximately 5 mm wide by 13 mm long. This clean, geometric design is also found in today’s Cartier Santos chains. Measuring 55 cm, the chain falls below the nape of the neck and creates a crisp line against the opening of a shirt or over a roll-neck jumper. This pre-owned piece retains its signature and original hallmark.
Architecture and jewellery craftsmanship
Each link features flat sides and rounded edges, polished on all sides. Based on the forçat link principle, each link pivots a quarter turn relative to the next, and their uniform gauge along the entire length gives the chain a consistent suppleness. The cross-section of the links, thicker than that of a standard jewellery chain, gives the necklace its density and a weight that keeps it securely in place on the collarbone. The flat surfaces reflect light in distinct, even patches, whereas a round link would scatter it. The clasp is a gold lobster clasp engraved with the Cartier signature, attached directly to the final link.
