The story behind this Cartier Santos
Paris, 1904. Aviation pioneer Alberto Santos-Dumont confided to his friend Louis Cartier that it was difficult to tell the time from a pocket watch whilst in flight. This request led to the creation of the manufacturer’s first men’s wristwatch. Its clean lines, square dial with rounded corners and visible screws were inspired by the industrial architecture of the early 20th century. The 0902 model illustrates the evolution of this design with the Galbée line, which emerged in the 1980s. The angles have been reworked to better hug the wrist.
Case, movement and strap of this Santos
The 24 mm-wide design combines brushed stainless steel with polished 18-carat yellow gold. The matt white dial serves as a backdrop for the black Roman numerals. The 7 o’clock hour marker incorporates the brand’s secret signature. Two blued steel sword-shaped hands sweep across the dial, protected by a sapphire crystal. The octagonal crown is set with a facetted blue spinel. The solid case back houses the Cartier 077 calibre. This self-winding mechanical movement offers a power reserve of approximately 38 hours. The articulated bracelet is designed to fit a 16 cm wrist and is secured by a concealed folding clasp.

This is a natural mechanical process for watches from this period.
