The history of this Cartier Baignoire Allongée
The House of Cartier unveiled unexpected geometries as early as the first decades of the 20th century. The oval design was first conceived for Grand Duchess Maria Pavlovna. The idea of distorting this perfect shape was born in the workshops of Cartier London during the 1960s. The craftsmen sought to cover a larger surface area of a woman's wrist by stretching it. This Cartier Baignoire Allongée reference 2515 embodies this stylistic audacity. It offers a fascinating alternative to the rigid lines of its era. This almost psychedelic visual distortion prefigures the design of the famous Crash watch while retaining absolute purity.
Case, calibre and bracelet of this Baignoire Allongée
This timepiece is distinguished by its curved case measuring 47 millimetres by 21 millimetres in 18-carat pink gold. A constellation of brilliant-cut diamonds hugs the infinite curve of its bezel. The circular-grained crown is topped by an impressive inverted briolette-cut diamond. The silvered dial features a delicate guilloché pattern beneath the domed sapphire crystal. The sword-shaped blued steel hands hover above black Roman numerals stretched to follow the silhouette of the watch. A rare Made in France inscription appears at the bottom of the dial. The solid back conceals the hand-wound Calibre 430 MC. This ultra-thin 131-piece movement beats at 21,600 vibrations per hour and guarantees a 43-hour power reserve. The thinness of the movement preserves the slender, sensual silhouette of the case without any technical compromises. A new matte alligator strap fastens around the wrist with an 18-carat pink gold folding clasp.
