The history of this Cartier Must 21
The House of Cartier unveiled the Must collection in the 1970s to offer a no-holds-barred approach to luxury watchmaking. In 1986, under the impetus of its management, the brand decided to look to the future and launched the Must 21. This model was aimed at a new generation of enthusiasts ready to enter the 21st century. The major stylistic anecdote of this creation lies in the overturning of its classic proportions. The designers decided to reduce the dial to its simplest form, giving maximum space to the bezel. On the bezel, the famous Roman numerals are engraved and gilded, creating an immediate contrast with the steel. Reference 9011 perfectly illustrates this architectural audacity, which profoundly marked the design of the 1990s.
Case, caliber and bracelet of this Must 21
This watch comes in a 28mm-diameter stainless steel case with polished and satin-finished finishes. Its extra-flat profile allows the piece to slip easily under a shirt cuff. The wide, two-tone bezel frames a double-zone dial with a cream center and a brushed gray outer ring. Hours and minutes are indicated by traditional sword-shaped blued steel hands. The fluted gold crown is set with a classic blue spinel cabochon. The timepiece is powered by a Swiss-made quartz movement signed by the Manufacture, guaranteeing high precision in everyday use. The plate of this caliber features delicate circular côtes de Genève. The whole is mounted on a new replacement strap in textured blue leather with white stitching, and closes with a steel folding clasp. The original water-resistance of this screw-fastened solid-bottom case was rated for 30 meters.
Why this Cartier watch
This model represents an excellent gateway into the world of the Parisian brand. Its assertive two-tone design has found a place of choice among collectors of vintage timepieces. The absence of a second hand preserves the purity of the dial and reinforces the minimalist aesthetic intended by the range's creators. Choosing this timepiece means acquiring a strong visual signature with a particularly attractive positioning on the second-hand market. The combination of the clear dial and the azure bracelet offers a highly appreciable versatility for everyday wear.
