Cartier’s nail, formed into a ring
In 1971, in New York, the designer Aldo Cipullo created a design for Cartier featuring a metal nail curved in on itself, transforming a workshop tool into a piece of jewellery. These Cartier Juste un Clou cufflinks in 18-carat rose gold recreate this design on a scale suited to the shirt cuff. Each cufflink forms a ring measuring 23 × 21 mm, with the flat head of the nail on one side and its bevelled tip on the other. Offered here as pre-owned jewellery, they follow the design of the Maison’s current model, reference OG000749, in solid rose gold and without gemstones.
Architecture and jewellery craftsmanship
The shank, approximately 2 mm in diameter, features five engraved grooves beneath the head, much like the shaft of a carpenter’s nail. The ring opens via a hinge situated opposite the head, after which the grooved end clips into the head to lock the button in place. This bar-free mechanism maintains a continuous line from the head to the tip, which crosses the ring just below the head and gives the button its coiled nail-like profile. The gold is mirror-polished across the entire surface, and the curve of the ring reflects light with every movement of the wrist.
Why choose these second-hand cufflinks
Cartier still offers this model in solid rose gold, at the price of a brand-new creation from the House. Second-hand pieces offer access to the same design, the same gold and the same signature, without compromising on craftsmanship. The nail motif, more graphic than a logo, slips into a musketeer-style cuff, whether worn with a dark suit or a shirt without a tie. For those who already wear a Juste un Clou bracelet or a rose gold watch, these rose gold cufflinks extend the same design all the way to the shirt cuff.
Contents and condition
Each cufflink bears its hallmarks, the AU 750 hallmark and the words ‘Made in France’ inside the ring, the eagle’s head and the master’s diamond on the reverse of the head, along with the Cartier signature. The pair has been polished and inspected by our master jeweller, and the rose gold has been restored to its original lustre. The two Cartier Juste un Clou cufflinks are supplied in a The Swiss Collector box.
