The House’s initial, in three shades of gold
In 1924, Louis Cartier combined yellow gold, rose gold and white gold in the Trinity ring, and this trio became one of the House’s signature motifs. This Cartier Double C ring reinterprets this motif around another signature element: the Cartier initial, featured twice at either end of the band. The model dates from the 1990s and is also known as the ‘C de Cartier’ large model. It is crafted from 18-carat gold, hallmarked 750, and features no gemstones, allowing the metal and the contrast of colours to take centre stage. This pre-owned piece offers a more graphic interpretation of the three golds than the Trinity, with a width of 10 mm.
Architecture and jewellery craftsmanship
The body of the ring consists of six parallel flutes: two in rose gold, two in white gold and two in yellow gold, whose rounded edges catch the light in turn. At each end, a polished yellow gold ‘C’ encloses the flutes, and the two letters face each other on the top of the finger, separated by an open space. This open ring nevertheless retains the substantial feel of a wide band, as the interior remains smooth, featuring three bands that extend the colours of the exterior. The rounded volume of the Cs contrasts with the taut lines of the flutes, and this relief lends the hand a striking presence without the need for a gemstone.
Why choose this second-hand ring
Cartier no longer produces this model, and the second-hand market remains the only way to acquire it. A ring of this width, set with bands in three colours of gold and finished with two sculpted letters, requires a level of craftsmanship that its second-hand price does not reflect. The signature engraved on the inside attests to its origin. Alongside a Trinity or a Love ring, the Cartier Double C ring features the same golds in a more architectural form, and it can also be worn on its own.
