The diamond latticework on these Cartier earrings
These pre-owned Cartier earrings bear the signature of a House founded in Paris in 1847, which King Edward VII appointed as a purveyor to his court in 1904. The pair takes the form of domed half-hoop earrings in 18-carat yellow gold, approximately 2 cm high, the surface of which is covered with a latticework of raised diamond-shaped panels. At the centre of each diamond-shaped motif sits a round brilliant-cut diamond, totalling 36 stones across the pair and an estimated total weight of approximately 0.59 carats. The design is reminiscent of gold tufting, with each cell holding a point of light.
Architecture and jewellery craftsmanship
Each clasp is set with 18 diamonds, totalling approximately 0.30 carats, grain-set at the base of diamond-shaped cells. The mirror-polished edges of the latticework rise above the stones, forming a crisp grid pattern along the entire curve. At both ends, three fluted ribs close the arch and lend it depth. The clasp consists of a stem and a hinged omega clip, which folds back behind the earlobe and keeps the earring pressed against the ear. Viewed from the front, the domed curve showcases the entire latticework and reflects light in small, regular flashes with every movement of the head.
Why these second-hand earrings
This lattice design is no longer featured amongst the creations Cartier currently offers in-store. The pair features 36 diamonds, each individually set in 18-carat yellow gold with a relief finish – a workshop craftsmanship whose current cost exceeds that of a second-hand purchase. The engraved signature and the numbering on each earring attest to their provenance. The 2 cm size remains discreet when worn, yet distinctive enough for both evening wear and an open-necked top.
