The story behind this Cartier Clé de Cartier
In 2015, Cartier breathed new life into its watchmaking world by unveiling the Clé de Cartier collection. This creation is distinguished by in-depth research into ergonomics and proportions, thus complementing the brand’s range alongside the silhouettes of the Ballon Bleu and Tank collections. The W2CL0003 model addresses a specific design challenge: that of reinventing the watch’s traditional winding mechanism to integrate it harmoniously as a natural extension of the case. The story behind its creation centres on the design of its rectangular winding crown. The engineers drew inspiration from the metal keys once used to wind parlour clocks and antique pocket watches. This patented mechanism incorporates a unique indexed ratchet system. When the key is pulled out to adjust the time, it pivots and then re-centres itself perfectly within the case axis with a soft mechanical click, evoking the gestures associated with vintage timepieces.
Case, movement and strap of this Clé de Cartier
The case of this model measures 31 mm in diameter, an ideal size to adorn the wrist discreetly. Its silhouette features cushion-shaped lines with softened edges, sculpted with alternating mirror-polished finishes. Designed as a single, integrated piece, the case extends directly to the first links of the bracelet without traditional lugs. The circular, domed bezel frames a silvery opaline dial. At its centre, the dial features meticulous guilloché work in a pattern of concentric waves, whilst the matt satin-finished hour ring is adorned with densely printed black Roman numerals. The sword-shaped hour and minute hands are crafted from flame-blued steel, providing optimal contrast without the need for luminescent material. The automatic movement housed beneath the solid steel case back is the Calibre 1847 MC, a in-house mechanism beating at a frequency of 28,800 vibrations per hour and providing a power reserve of 42 hours. The two-tone bracelet features outer rows of brushed steel with polished chamfers and central links in mirror-polished 18-carat yellow gold, all secured by a fully concealed double folding clasp.
Why this Cartier watch
Choosing this pre-owned Clé de Cartier represents a unique opportunity. This 31 mm model is no longer available in the current catalogue of the brand’s official boutiques, which makes purchasing it from The Swiss Collector all the more appealing. The two-tone design, combining steel with 18-carat yellow gold, strikes a balance between the robustness of a contemporary watch and the refinement of precious metals. Its technical sophistication, driven by a recent in-house calibre, is combined with wearing comfort thanks to the absence of protruding lugs. This is a prime choice for the connoisseur seeking a watch with character – less visually striking than classic models, yet possessing a truly distinctive design signature.
Contents supplied and condition
This timepiece is supplied with its set, comprising its original red leather octagonal Cartier case, two spare links stored in a protective pouch, allowing the bracelet to be fully adjusted, as well as its official service invoice issued by the Cartier boutique on Rue Robert-Céard in Geneva in June 2020. This watch has been worn and shows signs of wear in the form of micro-scratches on the surface, mainly visible on the polished areas of the bezel and bracelet. These slight marks bear witness to its history without altering the geometry of the case. A surface polish or refinish can be carried out on request at our workshops prior to delivery to restore the surfaces to their original mirror-like shine.
