The history of this Cartier Must scarf
The House of Cartier launched the Must concept in the early 1970s under the impetus of Alain Dominique Perrin. The aim at the time was to expand the world of high jewellery by offering accessories that echoed the brand's historic aesthetic codes. This silk square is a direct tribute to Jeanne Toussaint, the founding figure of the Parisian artistic direction. Nicknamed the Panther, she imposed this emblematic feline on the creations of the time. The motif illustrates an imaginary office littered with handwritten correspondence and precious finery, capturing the golden age of the rue de la Paix style.
Fabric, printing and finishes of this Must
The architecture of this piece is based on a classic 90 cm by 90 cm format. The weft is made from pure silk twill, a material offering a heavy fall and characteristic fluidity. The central design features a bib necklace in azure, surrounded by cabochon rings and emerald brooches on a contrasting parchment background. The borders are a deep navy blue. True to the standards of handcrafted luxury, the edges of this design are meticulously hand-rolled right side out and secured with invisible stitches.
Why this Cartier scarf
This edition printed in the 1980s is no longer edited today, making it a sought-after testament to vintage accessory collections. Its asymmetrical geometric arrangement reveals very different aesthetics depending on the knotting technique chosen. The contrast between the golden yellow elements of the panther and the depth of the navy blues offers a strong visual presence while retaining an understated elegance.
Contents supplied and condition
This scarf is supplied alone, carefully preserved over the years. The silk retains an even sheen and the colours have retained their original saturation. The cylindrical volume of the roulotté is perfectly maintained throughout. Tiny wear-related shadows can be seen under low-angled lighting, testifying to its lived experience while confirming the excellent conservation of the fibre.
