The history of this Audemars Piguet Royal Oak
The House of Audemars Piguet turned haute horlogerie on its head in 1972 with the creation of the Royal Oak by designer Gérald Genta. Initially conceived as an extra-flat watch with two hands, its design imposed a bold octagonal case. For a long time, integrating a chronograph complication into this singular silhouette represented a technical challenge in terms of preserving the original finesse. The Manufacture overcame this obstacle by adopting an ultra-thin calibre introduced in 1988, enabling the reference 26022BC.OO.D002CR.01 to retain its slender profile. This mechanical choice gives the timepiece its ideal proportions and makes this iteration a feat that respects the innovative spirit of the model.
Case, calibre and bracelet of this Royal Oak
Made from solid white gold, the 39 mm-diameter case is a remarkably contained 11 mm thick. The surfaces alternate between brushed flats and polished bevels that catch the light. The opaline silver dial features the characteristic Grande Tapisserie motif. It is enhanced by applied hour-markers and white gold hands with a discreet luminescent coating. The watch houses the self-winding Calibre 2385. This movement comprises 304 components and 37 jewels, beating at a frequency of 3 Hz to provide 40 hours of power reserve. Protected by a flat sapphire crystal and a solid gold caseback secured by 8 screws, the watch is water-resistant to 50 metres. The whole is articulated around a black alligator leather strap secured by a white gold folding clasp.
Why this Audemars Piguet watch
This declination attracts collectors for its historical dimensions that have disappeared from the catalogue. While modern iterations favour a more massive 41mm approach, the 39mm size offers absolute visual balance on the wrist. The white gold adds a dimension of calm luxury, in stark contrast to the ostentation of the yellow gold. Unavailable in shops, this watch represents a rare opportunity to acquire a chronograph of perfect proportions. It skilfully combines the nobility of a precious metal with the timeless elegance of a dark bracelet.
