The history of this Audemars Piguet Royal Oak
In 1972, Audemars Piguet unveiled the Royal Oak, designed by Gérald Genta in a single night. The 15450ST model is fully in keeping with this heritage, retaining the original architecture. This watch draws its visual inspiration from a diver’s helmet. The technical decision to secure the octagonal bezel to the case with eight visible through-screws was driven by the need for water resistance and necessitated a new approach to watch design. This design elevated stainless steel to the status of a precious metal. This particular model meets a demand for more understated proportions whilst preserving the design codes of the Le Brassus-based brand.
Case, calibre and strap of this Royal Oak
This model features a 37 mm diameter steel case. The finishes alternate meticulously between brushed surfaces and hand-polished chamfers. The ruthenium-grey dial features the Grande Tapisserie geometric pattern. It is adorned with white gold hour-markers and hands with a luminescent coating, as well as a date window at 3 o’clock. The open sapphire crystal caseback reveals the Calibre 3120, an in-house self-winding movement. Comprising 280 components, it offers a power reserve of 60 hours. The 22-carat gold oscillating weight is engraved with the family coat of arms. The watch is mounted on an integrated steel bracelet, whose links are secured by a butterfly clasp. The timepiece is water-resistant to 50 metres.
