The history of this Audemars Piguet Classique
Audemars Piguet has carved out a place for itself in the history of fine watchmaking through its ability to reconcile technical constraints with aesthetic demands. In the early 1980s, whilst the Swiss watch industry was undergoing a period of transformation with the emergence of quartz, the manufacture in Le Brassus chose to showcase the expertise of the artisans of the Joux Valley. This Audemars Piguet Classique model is a product of that era, when a watch was akin to a piece of goldsmith’s art. Its creation met the expectations of a clientele seeking a mechanical watch with a slim profile that would remain discreet on the wrist. A technical feature of this piece lies in the collaboration between the manufacture and master chainmakers to craft the two-tone link bracelet. The creation of this gold bracelet required meticulous adjustment of the 18-carat yellow and white gold wires. This model stands as a major testament to the brand’s heritage, set against the mass-produced watches of its era.
Case, movement and bracelet of this Classique
This model is characterised by an oblong case measuring 30.5 mm by 35 mm, designed without any visible lugs. The 18-carat yellow gold case features a fixed bezel adorned with a twisted motif. The dial has a silver-toned frosted finish, set with 12 applied yellow gold baton hour-markers and two sleek dagger-shaped hands. All the dials are protected by a flat plexiglass crystal. This watch is powered by the Calibre 2120/1 automatic movement, renowned for its refined construction. This movement incorporates 36 jewels and provides a power reserve of 40 hours. The two-tone braided Milanese mesh bracelet is seamlessly integrated into the case and fastens with a discreet 18-carat yellow gold clasp engraved with the manufacturer’s logo.
Why this Audemars Piguet watch
The appeal of this two-tone configuration on the pre-owned market lies in its rarity and the quality of craftsmanship evident in its components. Whilst the brand’s contemporary collections lean towards sporty designs, this classic model offers an aesthetic not found in current catalogues. This watch represents an opportunity for collectors to acquire a high-performance historic movement combined with traditional watchmaking craftsmanship. The timepiece strikes a balance between the brand’s heritage value and the pleasure of wearing a superbly crafted piece.
