The graphic design of these diamond earrings
In 1919, the engineer Marcel Tolkowsky published *Diamond Design* and established the proportions of the modern brilliant cut, the one that reflects the most light back to the eye. These 18-carat yellow gold diamond earrings feature 12 diamonds, arranged across a two-part design. A rounded bar, set with a row of five diamonds, slides into a mirror-polished U-shaped clasp which holds a diamond of approximately 0.25 carats at its base. The pair totals approximately 0.75 carats. This unsigned second-hand piece measures 22 mm in height and hangs just below the earlobe, where the lower diamond catches the light with the slightest movement of the head.
Architecture and jewellery craftsmanship
The central diamond in each earring rests in a 4-prong setting, mounted slightly raised within the hollow of the frame to showcase the stone all around its perimeter. Above, the five diamonds on the bar are set in grain settings, each in its own recess, between two polished gold fillets that frame the line. The 10 small diamonds in the pair total approximately 0.25 carats, whilst the two central diamonds total approximately 0.50 carats. The two elements form a rigid unit, and the bar runs in front of the hoop, giving the design real depth on the ear. The threaded stem is fitted with an openwork screw cap, a more secure fastening than a traditional push-button clasp.
Why these second-hand earrings
Brand-new drop earrings of this calibre, with two central diamonds of this size and such a generous setting, require a level of craftsmanship and a quantity of gold that significantly drive up the price in today’s jewellery market. On the second-hand market, the same quantity of diamonds remains available for a fraction of that cost. The design, which bears no signature or logo, can be worn on its own or with a yellow gold chain, and its vertical line discreetly frames the neck.
