The interlaced design of this yellow gold ring
In 1919, the engineer Marcel Tolkowsky published the proportions of the modern brilliant cut: 57 facets calculated to reflect light towards the crown of the stone. It is this cut that features in the 33 round diamonds set in this 18-carat yellow gold ring, with a total weight of approximately 0.50 carats. The design features bands that cross diagonally and taper to a point, layered one upon the other like blades. When worn, this diagonal movement elongates the hand, whilst the criss-crossed ring retains a substantial presence, that of a solid 750-hallmarked setting. Unsigned, this pre-owned piece speaks for itself through its construction rather than a name.
Architecture and jewellery craftsmanship
The dome features layers of mirror-polished gold bands and three rows of diamonds, separated by openwork that allows light to pass beneath the stones. Each row is set in a grain setting – small metal beads raised with a chisel that hold the diamonds in place without obscuring them – and its ends are edged with a fine beaded border. The 33 brilliant-cut diamonds, each weighing approximately 0.015 carats, form three rows of varying lengths that follow the curve of the dome. On one side, all the bands converge to form a wide, solid band with a flat interior. Between the rows of brilliant-cut diamonds, the polished surfaces reflect light across broad planes, giving the ring its golden lustre even before that of the stones.
Why choose this second-hand ring
A wide ring of this size requires a great deal of metal and painstaking setting work at the workbench, stone by stone. As a second-hand piece, it offers a generous setting and 33 diamonds for a significantly lower price than a comparable new design. Its design, with no visible logo, can be worn on its own as a statement ring or alongside a slender band, and its sloping line follows the natural movement of the fingers.
